THE WEIGHT OF A THREAD

“The language that women speak when no one is there to correct them.”

                                                                                               (Hélène Cixous)

“I don’t understand contemporary art, but what I do know is that it’s about making

something new out of something old.”                                                                                                                                (María Luisa Derqui)

To write as if one were weaving, with all one’s soul, with all one’s body, with pain and

with joy, as if giving birth. The first material woman uses to create and project herself is

cloth; it is a promise of identity, of self-sufficiency. Word, written memory, a trace of

                          our presence in this world.

To weave is to  cultivate..                                                                                 (Alicia Chillida)

There are sophisticated metric systems to weigh matter, many extremely precise lenses to observe the stars and watches to measure time. Yet no one has found something capable of quantifying the weight of poetry. Heartened by an ancestral understanding and guided by her intuition, Millán moves forward in a luminous sequence, supported by the lightness of a thread. The nomadic quality of  the work of Pilar Millan, forever incomplete, goes on and adds a blue chapter to this constant journey, which is that of her own existence.

TEXTUM GRAZALEMA/ CÁDIZ  is part of a project based on the theme of communication  Through various recordings, the artist creates a unified  geographic area that includes audio and visual documentation.

As pillars of the project there is on the one hand , the spoken word as a link of different languages   reflected in the voices of the weavers , and secondly, their means of expression , seen in the pictures taken on the looms, the textile colonies end product made in the workshop, which also involves the concept of voice.

The looms although thousands of kilometres apart yet share the same language. Galicia , Andalucia ( Grazalema ) , the cotton fields of Niger in Africa and the textile colonies of the Ter Llobregat in Catalonia are seen through photography , video and objects and the different voices of those who made this exposition possible .
